BT Is Launching a Cheap Fibre Broadband Deal For Low Income Households

Broadband is something most people can’t live without nowadays. It’s become an essential utility that keeps a household functioning.

Imagine if you couldn’t stream your favourite TV show after a long day at work... or if your children had to complete their homework without an internet-enabled computer.

While broadband may be deemed a necessity, it’s yet another expense every month which most people could do without. 1 in 6 people feel like it’s putting a strain on their finances and 16% are struggling to pay their broadband bills.

However, BT has announced it's going to provide a helping hand to low-income families. At the end of June, BT is launching a super cheap and super-fast fibre broadband package that will be available to 4.6 million means-tested households.

What's included with BT's cheap fibre broadband plan?

BT's Home Essentials plan will deliver a fibre connection with average download speeds of 36Mb. That’s fast enough to download a HD TV show in around 1 minute and 40 seconds, or download a HD film in less than 6 minutes.

To put that into perspective, it would take approximately 7 minutes to download a HD TV show and 25 minutes for a HD film with a standard ADSL broadband connection.

But that’s not all you get with BT’s Home Essential broadband plan... you’ll also receive 700 minutes of calls - all for just £15 per month!

Eligible customers can also choose to upgrade their package to a faster 67Mbps connection and unlimited calls for £20 month, or downgrade to a landline-only plan with unlimited calls for just £10 per month.

What else do I need to know?

There are some other important details you may want to know... both new and existing customers can get this offer, providing that they meet the means-tested benefits. You can find more on the eligibility criteria below.

If you’re a new customer, just be aware that you will be credit checked, however, BT has assured the public that low credit ratings won’t be rejected.

You may be pleased to know that the Home Essentials plan is no contract, so customers who sign up will be free to leave whenever they like, without incurring a penalty fee.

Is this the cheapest deal on the market?

Founder of MoneySavingExpert.com, Martin Lewis, commented: "While there are occasionally short-term promotional deals available from other firms – all of these are usually at a higher monthly price with new customer sign-up incentives, such as a £100 Amazon voucher, that brings the price down once factored in.

"The fact this deal has a consistent underlying price of £15/month with a big-name supplier – that if you're already a customer shouldn't require a credit check – makes it pretty close to unbeatable, for cheapness and lack of hassle. If you want substantially faster speeds though, it is always worth doing a comparison and double checking elsewhere.”

Am I eligible for BT’s new broadband plan?

BT’s new Home Essentials tariff is intended for low-income households. This means you must be receiving one of the following benefits in order to be eligible for the cheap broadband plan.

  • Universal credit

  • Guarantee credit element of pension credit

  • Jobseeker's allowance

  • Income support

  • Employment and support allowance
