This news is unwelcome by all those affected as many individuals are struggling financially due to the global pandemic.

Which providers are raising their prices?

We’re only 12 days into the new year, but already Virgin Media has been contacting customers recently to inform them of impending price rises for broadband, TV and phone services.

It is expected that other providers will be breaking the bad news soon too. BT changed their terms and conditions in 2020 to allow for the expected price increase, and its sister companies EE and Plusnet did the same.

How much are prices rising?

Virgin Media’s average increase will be around 4%, which is said to be 13 times higher than the current consumer price inflation rate. This means customers can expect price rises of up to £54 this year!

BT, EE and Plusnet said they would increase broadband prices by 3.9 above the first CPI (Consumer Price Index) rate published every year, which will be released in a couple of weeks’ time.

How to avoid the price hikes

1: Vulnerable customers such as those on a special package for universal credit won’t be affected by the price increases. Check with your broadband provider if you have any queries or concerns about your financial obligations when the new tariff starts.

2: If you’re unhappy with the new, higher price, you have the right to cancel your contract early, without penalty, under new rules set by Ofcom. However, you’ll need to inform your provider within 30 days of receiving the message about the tariff change.

3: Switch providers and take advantage of introductory offers. Broadband providers reserve the best prices for new customers, so by switching you could save as much as £350! Make sure to research the market and find the best tariff for your speed requirements.

Some introductory offers even come with free gift and extra incentives, like cashback and gift cards.
